What are the usual reasons for septic tanks not working properly?

There are a number of reasons why septic tanks may not work properly:

  • A structural defect to the tank.
  • Inadequate soakaways, sometimes resulting in a direct connection from the tank to an adjacent ditch or watercourse.
  • Insufficient thought being given at an early stage of construction to the depth and length of soakaways.
  • Poorly draining land e.g. clay or heavy subsoil.
  • A high and variable water table.
  • plot size inadequate for septic tank drainage.
  • Increased water useage e.g. from domestic appliances such as washing machines.
  • Overuse of disinfectants, detergents and cleansing materials. Whereever possible biodegradeable products should be used. It may also be necessary to add special bacteria to your tank (Cess Clear)
  • Inadequate maintenance.
  • Infrequent emptying, it is recommended that tanks are emptied once a year.
  • Soakaways blocked with detergent residue or fat.(Cess Clear)
  • Inability of the land to absorb any further effluent (sewer sickness)

Mother Nature is a wonderful thing. She has given us friendly bacteria (micro organisms) to help treat our waste products in a safe, fast, natural way.

Did you know that if we did not have Natures power of bacteria then we could not digest our food. The good bacteria found in our stomach aid the digestion process and help to take the nutrients from our food.

Nature’s bacteria also help your local water company break down the sewage from our homes. All of the waste from home toilets, showers, washing machines etc, is treated using micro organisms. The friendly bacteria break down the waste and help it to be processed into safe useable water again.

However, some houses and commercial premises are not connected to the mains drains and dispose of their waste using a septic tank, cess pit or treatment system. All septic systems and treatment systems use bacteria to function. The bacteria break down the solid waste, liquid waste, paper, food scraps etc and allow the liquid to flow to a leech field, ditch or other place. The bacteria in the septic tank and treatment system can be affected by bleach, fat, grease, mouthwash and harsh cleaning chemicals etc.

If the bacteria are affected then the system will stop working effectively and this can lead to odours, blockages, floods and the need to empty the tank or system more regularly costing hundreds of £’s
Regular maintenance of the system by adding fresh bacteria will keep the system in tip top condition. What this means for you is:

No odours
Clearing of the leach field ensuring free flow of the liquid phase
Solid waste and paper becomes reduced and more mobile – resulting in less frequent emptying – saving you hundreds of £’s
